It was a nail biter, but Don Bertrand's resolution passed 6-3. It came out narrower than it went in, but it came out just the same. The original resolution included the area from the Vermilion River bridge south to Bonin Road along Ambassador Caffery Parkway, but an amendment took it down to the stretch between Verot School Road and Bonin Road. Despite traditional arguments to the contrary, proponents carried the day with appeals for forward thinking and incremental movement toward a more walk able bike able Lafayette in the future, beginning here and now. See KATC coverage here Our sincere thanks go to Councilman Bertrand for bringing the resolution forward; to Mike Hollier, MPO Director, for substantive development of the concept; and our Bike Lafayette members who came out in support. It could easily have gone the other way. There is no doubt that our voices of support helped.
This is, of course, only a first step. The resolution directs City planners to develop a detailed plan for consideration by the Zoning Commission. If the Zoning Commission approves, then it goes back to the City Council. If the City Council approves, then it becomes an ordinance (the local equivalent of law). Next comes the allocation of funding for the green space and bike ped improvements... So, stay tuned for the next installment and your opportunity to further advance our cause. With perseverance, we will get there. Go, bikes!
