BikeLafayette is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization representing the needs of residents of Lafayette, Louisiana, and the surrounding area. It is made up of representatives from diverse backgrounds and professions with the purpose of creating a healthier community and environment. They collaborate with the City and Parish of Lafayette, priority stakeholders, government and elected officials, law enforcement, and interested parties to represent citizen involvement and form and improve policy and infrastructure that supports safe and increased bicycling.. BikeLafayette focuses on education to create safe motorists and cyclists, working with schools, adult driver education, and law enforcement. This work results in protecting people who bike and walk while also promoting cycling as a fun, safe and accessible way to commute in and around Lafayette. Community building includes hosting bicycling events that provide awareness and safety while also encouraging more people to engage in the community. This collaboration speaks to the vested interest that local organizations, businesses and community members have in making Lafayette a more bike-friendly and bike-accessible community. The Board will support the work of BikeLafayette and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are guided by BikeLafayette’s Executive Director, the Board-ED relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected. Specific Board Member responsibilities include:
Leadership, governance and oversight
Assist the Executive Director in developing and managing the implementation of a strategic plan for the vision of the organization
Be able to identify and approach potential sponsors for BikeLafayette and it’s endeavors
Approving BikeLafayette’s annual budget and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities
Assisting in identifying and recruiting other Board Members
Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments
Representing BikeLafayette to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization
Ensuring BikeLafayette’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities BikeLafayette serves
Board meetings are held monthly and last approximately one hour. There is a time commitment associated with being part of the board, including availability to participate in meetings and events, sometimes on nights and weekends. Board Members will be expected to help with projects that the organization takes on, such as (but not limited to) bicycle rides, education endeavors, booths at fairs and expos, and bicycle corrals. Involvement from the board is minimal throughout the year, but Board Members are to consider BikeLafayette a philanthropic priority and are expected to help and promote bicycling in our community.
This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about BikeLafayette’s mission. We are looking for individuals who have an interest in cycling and all forms of active transportation. Selected Board Members will have achieved leadership stature in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector. His/her accomplishments will allow him/her to attract other well-qualified, high-performing Board Members. They must demonstrate professional judgement, discretion, and maturity, and have a passion for creating bicycle and pedestrian communities.
We are currently in need of someone capable of help to create a bicycle education program including PSAs and working on a ticket diversion program. There are a lot of resources and support involved with this task. This person will also serve as an expert on bicycle safety education programs They will help the Executive Director lead BikeLafayette's development and implementation of a comprehensive Bike Education program, to include both adult and child-appropriate curriculum
We would also encourage CPAs, lawyers, and anyone else who has a passion for bicycling and skills they would like to use to help promote bicycling apply.
Service on BikeLafayette’s Board of Directors is without remuneration, except for administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs in relation to Board Members’ duties.
